MY PHILOSOPHY

The purpose of DBT is to build a life worth living. By learning new coping skills to manage emotions, improve relationships, and decrease tendencies to engage in self-destructive or avoidant behaviors, you can begin the process of finding meaning, confidence, and direction in life. The purpose of the DBT skills group (which is structured more like a coping skills class) is to be in an environment with other committed members who are also dedicated to practicing new coping skills to improve the quality of their life. The encouragement, momentum, and accountability gained from the group environment can assist you in making positive changes.
BEGINNING DBT THERAPY

The process of getting started in a DBT group is simple. Contact me for an initial assessment (which lasts 45-50 minutes). In this individual appointment, we go over your goals, past history and vulnerability areas, and present stressors you are struggling with. I provide orientation to DBT, the structure of the skills group, and assist you individualizing a DBT Diary Card so that you are ready to start group. The advantage of having four different DBT skills groups is that I am able to place you in a group with others who have similar goals, issues, or life stage. This often provides group members with greater ease in sharing and momentum in working through issues as they can learn from others who are also receiving coaching and applying the skills. By the end of the assessment, we will have identified which group you would be the best fit for and you will have a start date for the group.
